UK Legal Tyre Tread Depth Rules, MOT Requirements & Fines

Under UK law, the minimum legal tyre tread depth for passenger cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre breadth and around its entire continuous circumference.

The Serious Cost of Illegal Tyres

The penalties for driving with bald or defective tyres in the UK are severe: police can issue a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. If all four tyres are bald, you face an immediate £10,000 fine and loss of your driving licence.

The 20p Coin Test

Insert a standard 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyre tread. If the outer band of the 20p coin is completely hidden by the rubber, your tread is above the legal 1.6mm limit. If the outer band is visible, your tyres are dangerously worn and require immediate replacement.
